The Legend of the Lucky Loonie

Next time you visit Generations Park ice rink, see if you can spot the lucky loonie at the center of the rink under the layers of ice. The loonie is a gold-colored Canadian coin. The Canadian ice hockey tradition began during the 2002 Winter Olympics when a Canadian icemaker placed a loonie under the center of the ice to assist with the puck-drop. Coincidentally, that year both the Canadian men’s and women’s ice hockey teams won gold, hence the start of the lucky loonie legend. We hope the lucky loonie at Generations Park brings you good luck as we move into 2022!
