Preview: Claves Unidos

This Saturday, May 21, Claves Unidos will be performing at Sipe Center. This unique story telling dance performance is the first of it’s kind on the Sipe Center stage.  CLAVES UNIDOS, translated “United Rhythms,” is a community-oriented dance company based in Richmond, Virginia. They celebrate the unique ability of dance to build community and bring people together with a particular focus on acknowledging the African heritage found in many beloved dance forms around the world.

Ancestral Memories: It Takes A Language is an original theatrical dance journey featuring dance, theater and vocal artists. It brings to the stage, CLAVES UNIDOS Artistic Director, Kevin LaMarr Jones’ signature, omni-genre combination of history and storytelling. Its weaving of movement, music and words calls upon familiar imagery to provide a relatable snapshot of the human experience. The show honors the contributions of strength and spirit, rhythm and rhyme, power and perseverance that people of African descent have made and continue to make around the world. It features music genres that share African heritage from Guatemala, Brazil, Cuba and the United States.

This project was supported [in part] by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Tickets are $20. Tickets will be available for purchase online, over the phone or in person at the box office. The box office is open for in person sales Thursday through Sunday, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. or by calling (540) 908-4208.
