North Main

We’re excited about a lot of things right now: the Gen-Oak Connector, Phase II of Riverwalk, the Sipe Center Summer Cinema Series, and more. But as much as anything else, we are excited about the improvements between Turner Ashby and John Wayland. The speed cameras are already in place, as we construct the crosswalk which they were designed to protect. The crosswalk should create a safe path for students to walk to JWES. Unlike the existing crosswalk, it will be coordinated with the stoplight, and it will contain a protected refuge in the center (because little legs can only go so fast).

Anyone in the protected refuge will have a moment to glance at the new sign which went up yesterday. We think the design speaks to who we are as a people and why our predecessors formed this Town. Moreover, if you’re not in your car, you can see that the sign contains the name of every person ever to have served as Mayor!

The image above is a slightly earlier design which appeared in the Daily News-Record in November. Our procurement process yielded offers from all over, but we were pleased that a local company, Eddie Edwards Signs, was the winner. Eddie Edwards tweaked the design a little for ease of fabrication.

By the time school opens, the TA Drive-Main Street intersection will be more attractive and much safer too.
