People often ask whether fishing will be permitted in the new Oakdale Pond. The TLDR (too long; didn’t read) answer is yes – but not yet.
This month, we will begin building a balanced fishery in the pond. We will stock a variety of fingerlings in the pond, and we want to give them at least 12-18 months to grow before allowing fishing.
At the risk of running afoul of strongly held opinions that people may have about what fish should (or should not) be stocked, we plan to have the following species:
- Largemouth Bass,
- Bluegills and Red Gills,
- Yellow Perch,
- Crappies,
- Channel Catfish (though these may be nixed if it is found that they might impair the pond’s meticulously engineered clay bottom),
- Three variety of Minnows,
- A few Koi for algae control,
- and various Crayfish and other forage.
Over the next few months, we will also be developing some fishing rules and deciding whether we ought to install a floating pier to make the angling experience better.
