Dominion Energy Warns of Extreme Weather

We are not overly alarmist, but Dominion sent us some weather guidance this morning that needs to be shared. (They’re good about warning us about weather events which could impact the electrical grid.) Here’s what they had to say:

  • “A stalled front is in the vicinity and moisture will flow against the front making 1-2 inch per hour downpours likely. A few spots may reach hourly rainfall rates of 3-4 inches.”
  • There is a 40% chance of seeing a 100-year rainfall event in the Valley.”
  • They expect “a few isolated 55-65 mph severe thunderstorm wind gusts.”

We know it is a big day for everyone, but we urge you to take proper precautions (courtesy of Shenandoah County Department of Fire & Rescue):

  • 🚗 TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN®: Never drive, walk, or bike through flooded roadways. You cannot tell how deep the water is or if the road has been washed away beneath it.
  • 🏞️ AVOID LOW-LYING AREAS: Stay away from creeks, streams, and areas known to flood quickly.
  • 📻 STAY INFORMED: Keep a close eye on the forecast throughout the day. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts (phone app, NOAA Weather Radio, local news).
  • 🏡 PREPARE YOUR HOME: Make sure your sump pump is working. Clear gutters and drains if it’s safe to do so before the rain starts.

Also, take note that the Sandy Bottom Recycle Center and Mini-Golf will be closed this weekend (7/18-7/20), as we move materials and equipment out of the 100-year flood plain.

Questions about events at the BVFC Lawn Party are best addressed to the Fire Company at 540-828-3121 Option 3.
