Remembering a Dedicated Police Chief

Bridgewater lost one of its own on August 6, 2025 when former Police Chief Mark L. Payne died. Mark grew up in Rockingham County and after graduating from Turner Ashby High School chose to stay near home and serve the people. He began his career in Bridgewater as a patrol officer in 1968. By the time of his retirement in 1997, he had risen to the rank of Chief. While he is remembered as a dedicated and committed law enforcement officer, he was also known for his love of music, amateur radio, and woodworking.

At last night’s meeting, the Town Council issued a proclamation in memory of Mark L. Payne for his many years of dedicated service to Bridgewater and its citizens, such service contributing to A Better Life in his hometown. The Council also extends its sympathies to Mark’s widow, Cathy, and to his family and friends in the greater Bridgewater community.
