This Saturday, February 7, is Charter Day, and we are kicking off the celebration early with our fourth Big Block of Cheese Day on Friday, February 6. “What is Big Block of Cheese Day?” you ask. We’re glad you asked!
When the Bridgewater Town was first signed by Governor Tazewell on February 7, 1835, Andrew Jackson was President. President Jackson was once gifted a very large block of cheese-over 1,400 pounds-by farmers from New York. He placed the cheese in the entryway of the White House and invited the public to come to be served a piece of cheese and mingle with officials. This became seen as a symbol of democracy at work.
In homage to this tale from the days of Bridgewater’s founding, we celebrate our anniversary in a similar way. We will have a block of cheese-admittedly one a good bit smaller than President Jackson’s-set out at the Town Office tomorrow (2/6) from 12:00 noon to 5:30 pm. You are invited to drop in, enjoy a piece of cheese, and share your thoughts, ideas, dreams, and concerns with Town Council members and staff.
