Town Dedicates Poplar Grove in Whitelow Park

In observance of Earth Day and Arbor Day this week, the Town dedicated a newly planted grove of tulip poplars at Whitelow Park earlier today. The trees were planted with the lofty aspiration that they might one day be the tallest in Virginia.

The ceremony was attended by Town Council members, staff, and residents. We wanted to share the words they heard spoken at the dedication that explain what these modest trees represent:

More than one person has whispered that our goal here is unachievable—that we cannot possibly hope to grow the tallest tree in Virginia.  That we should simply plant some trees, pat ourselves on the back, and see what happens.

When I hear those whispers, I just smile and shake my head.  Those people may very well understand trees—but they do not understand Bridgewater.  They do not understand us.  Our goal for these trees represents what is best about us.

We are unafraid.  Unafraid of whispers.  Unafraid of challenges.  Unafraid of failure.  If the cost of trying is simply a few judgmental whispers–then why not try?  When our days here are over, the height of these trees will not matter.  But it will matter very much that we did our best.  And the goal is simply a reminder for us to keep striving.

At the same time, we recognize our own limitations.  We cannot will these trees to be tall.  We are only caretakers, and greater powers will determine their destiny.  But we can be diligent caretakers.  We can foster them and nurture them—as we should foster and nurture everything within our grasp.

And we are—truth be told—simple people.  We do not aspire to build giant skyscrapers, grow into a large city, or make headlines. Patiently coaxing greatness out of the soil feels right to us—and it is quite enough.  Simple things matter to us.  And simple things are worth doing right.

It must also be said that we have abiding faith in this place.  These trees will outlive everyone here today.  None of us can hope to care for them throughout their lifespans.  Yet we have faith that when we are gone, Bridgewater will give rise to people who care about this place just as much as we do—just as we now walk in the footsteps of those who came before us.

Without a doubt, people will continue to whisper about the folly of our endeavor.  Let them.

Because in their silence, these trees announce to the world that there is a place—Bridgewater, Virginia—where people care enough to start something wonderful they will never live to see finished.
