If you’ve traveled along Oakwood Drive or Main Street during the morning or afternoon commute hours the last few days, you have likely noticed the unusual backups in traffic. While we cannot yet tell you the issue has been resolved, we do want to take a moment to explain what is happening and what we are doing about it.
There appears to be an issue with the computer housed inside the traffic-signal cabinet, the “controller.” The controller is acting as if the pedestrian crosswalk buttons are being continuously activated. We could not find any issue in the buttons or wiring. In fact, the issue continued even when we disconnected the crosswalk buttons altogether. We called in the experts from Richardson Wayland to help us find and resolve the issue. Despite their best efforts over several hours yesterday, they were not able to. They will send their controller specialist when he is available on Tuesday, and we are hopeful that he will be able to identify and fix the issue.
So what happens in the meantime? Fortunately, outside of peak hours, this is not causing any major backups. During the peak commute hours, however, we plan to have a police officer at the intersection to keep traffic moving more smoothly.
We recognize the frustration that many people are feeling about the traffic backups, and we apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused. Please know that we are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it as quickly as possible. While that may not be as quickly as we all wish it were, we will do what we can to ensure traffic moves smoothly until the issue is fixed.
