Work on Veterans Park Underway

Have you noticed the work being done along Main Street beside the former Sergio’s building? That is the site of your newest park – Veterans Park! Work began earlier this month and should be completed by the end of November.

We are building Veterans Park to honor those who have served our country as well as to beautify the Midtown area a bit. When complete, the park will have a patio with benches and a wall to display plaques honoring our veterans. The display wall will be flanked by a flagpole and an eternal flame. The backdrop to this patio will be landscaped with a terraced flower bed, a couple of flowering trees, and a dawn redwood.

Now you may be wondering, “That last one sounds awfully specific. Why a dawn redwood? What is a dawn redwood anyway?” We chose this tree for a very specific reason. The dawn redwood was first discovered in fossils in 1941, and it was thought to have been long extinct. A few years later, however, a few living trees were found in China. While there are only about five thousand currently remaining in the wild, the endangered species now grows in parks and arboreta around the world. In our park, the dawn redwood will symbolize that those who are gone are neither lost forever nor forgotten.

We will be sharing more updates on the construction and details about the park over the coming weeks here on the Buzz, so make sure to stay tuned!
